Answer: Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

Question: Tell me where you’d find information for recommended tyre pressures and how to check them.

Answer: Check the manufacturer’s manual. Use a reliable pressure gauge when tyres are cold, check all tyres (including spare), and refit valve caps.

Question: Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted.

Answer: The rigid part should be at least as high as the eye level or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as comfortable.

Question: Tell me how you’d check the tyres for safe tread depth and condition.

Answer: No cuts or bulges. Minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth and around the entire outer circumference.

Answer: Turn on the light switch (ignition on if needed), then walk around the vehicle to inspect them visually.

Question: Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.

Answer: A warning light (ABS) will illuminate on the dashboard if there is a system fault.

Answer: Turn on the hazard warning switch, then walk around the car to check all indicator lights.

Answer: Press the brake pedal and check using reflections in windows/doors, or ask someone to look behind.

Answer: Apply gentle pressure to steering wheel while starting engine; a slight movement should be felt as assistance kicks in.

Question: Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and when to use them.

Answer: Turn on dipped headlights, operate fog light switch, check warning light is on. Use only when visibility is reduced to under 100 metres.

Question: Tell me how you switch from dipped to main beam headlight.

Answer: Switch to main beam and check that the blue main beam indicator light appears on the dashboard.

Question: Open bonnet and tell me how you’d check sufficient engine oil.

Answer: Pull out dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert, pull out again and check level between min and max markers.

Answer: Check fluid level against min/max markings on header tank and top up if engine is cold.

Answer: Turn light dial/switch control to the dipped headlights setting.

Answer: Press heated rear window button (rectangle with 3 wavy lines).

Answer: Set fan speed high, turn airflow to windscreen, and turn on AC/demister.
